The first symbol is the Japanese character REI. Rei means spirit, air, essence of creation.
The second symbol is the Japanese character KI. Ki means power or energy. REIKI translates into Universal Life Force. REIKI is gentle but powerful, simple but effective.

REIKI is a time honored, sacred method of bringing balance and harmony to the Body, physically, the Mind, mentally, and the Soul, spiritually. The ancient Tibetan Buddhist Sutras, or records, date back almost three thousand years. With the hands on the body, REIKI is on. With the hands off the body, REIKI is off. Clients may feel warmth or tingling but it always unique to the individual. The energy is non-invasive and gentle. REIKI has been documented to assist in reducing pain, anxiety, physical limitations to experiences of more ease and transformational shifts in consciousness.
Before 1980 REIKI had been in the oral tradition during its history so there was little to read about REIKI. But now REIKI has become much more wide spread and accepted in the US and other Western traditions.In some cases it has been incorporated with western medicine showing significant improvement of health. and ease in suffering in many individual cases.
Judy Alvarez, REIKI II Practitioner, was trained and inducted by REIKI Master Judy-Carol Stewart in 1989 in Houston, Texas. In her hand book Master Stewart acknowledges and asks blessings and guidance of the ascended Tibetan Buddhist masters, Dr. Mikao Usui, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, and Hawayo Takata in the manifestation of her work and training material. I am very grateful for having received this powerful initiation and will honor the practice to the best of my ability.

Dr. Usui was a Buddhist monk and is the founder of this hands on energy healing technique through intense study and through the devotion of his life. In a transcendent state he saw the Sanskrit letters of this energy – REIKI- in a light so powerful he felt rested and full of energy after having meditated and fasted for 21 days on Mount Kura Yama. Dr. Usui passed on his teaching to Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, a retired naval officer, who passed on the teaching to Hawayo Takata. It was Hawayo Takata that brought REIKI to Hawaii and then to the rest of the United States in the 1970’s.
